What Is Your Ideal Body Weight?

Ideal Body Weight (IBW) is an estimated healthy weight range based on your height and gender. It is widely used by doctors, dietitians, and pharmacists as a quick reference for planning diets, calculating medication doses, and assessing health risks.

IBW is not a perfect measure — it does not account for muscle mass, body composition, or age. But it gives you a useful starting point for understanding whether your current weight is within a healthy range for your height.

Why Knowing Your Ideal Body Weight Matters

Your ideal body weight is a helpful guideline to see if you’re within a healthy range for your height. Doctors, dietitians, and fitness experts often use IBW as a quick reference when planning diets or health programs. While it’s not a perfect measure, it gives you a starting point to understand if you may be underweight, at a healthy weight, or above the recommended range.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Select your gender.
  2. Enter your height (and weight if required).
  3. Click calculate to see your estimated IBW (Ideal Body Weight).

The result will show you how your current weight compares with standard formulas. This tool works instantly on desktop or mobile.

How the Ideal Body Weight is Calculated

This calculator uses the Devine formula — the most widely used IBW formula in clinical settings:

For men: IBW = 50 kg + 0.9 kg × (height in cm − 152)
For women: IBW = 45.5 kg + 0.9 kg × (height in cm − 152)

Example — woman, 165 cm tall:
IBW = 45.5 + 0.9 × (165 − 152) = 45.5 + 11.7 = 57.2 kg

Other common formulas (Robinson, Hamwi) give slightly different results. All are estimates — a healthy weight range of ±10% around your IBW is considered acceptable.

Ideal Body Weight for Indians

Standard IBW formulas were developed based on Western populations. Research shows that Indians and South Asians tend to have higher body fat at lower weights due to differences in body composition.

As a result, Indian health guidelines suggest a slightly lower ideal weight target compared to Western standards for the same height.

Practical adjustment: if you are of Indian origin, the lower end of your IBW healthy range is a more appropriate target — especially for reducing risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which are more prevalent at lower BMI in South Asians.

Consult a doctor or dietitian for a personalised target suited to your body type and health history.

Limitations of IBW

For athletes and people with high muscle mass, IBW will show as “above ideal” even if body fat is low and health is excellent. In such cases, body fat percentage is a more accurate measure.

  • Age and lifestyle factors
  • Muscle mass or athletic build
  • Bone density
  • Medical conditions

That’s why it should be used as a guide, not a strict diagnosis. Always consult a doctor or nutrition expert for personal advice.

FAQ

IBW is an estimated healthy weight range based on height and gender, used as a guideline for health and fitness.

It uses standard medical formulas, but results should be viewed as estimates. For clinical accuracy, consult a doctor.

Use the chart above for a quick reference. For a 165cm woman, healthy weight is roughly 54–67 kg. For a 175cm man, roughly 64–78 kg. These are based on the Devine formula with a ±10% healthy range. Use the calculator above for your exact number.

Yes, IBW is a good starting point, but combine it with BMI, waist-to-hip ratio, and professional advice for safe goal-setting.

No. IBW gives a target weight based on height, while BMI evaluates body fat using height and weight together.

Being above IBW does not automatically mean you are unhealthy. Athletes and muscular individuals often weigh more than IBW due to muscle, not fat. However, if your weight is significantly above IBW and you have a sedentary lifestyle, it is worth discussing with a doctor. Combining IBW with BMI and body fat percentage gives a more complete picture.
